Shwe Shwe is a printed cotton material originally introduced to South Africa by the first
German missionaries in the late 19th Century. Popular with the Xhosa and other cultures, original Shwe Shwe
carries a watermark on the back and is now available in a large variety of colours. Genuine Shwe Shwe is
manufactured by Da Gama Textiles.
What is a Poppi?
A Poppi(e) is an Afrikaans term for a doll or soft toy and also a term of endearment.
Who makes the Shwe Shwe Poppis?
The Shwe Shwe Poppis™ are produced by a team of 14 women and 1 man in Zola, Soweto, all of whom come from the local community. The age of the producers ranges from 21 to 69.
Are there any children involved in their production?
Not at all. The poppis are based on the drawings of a group of children at the Zola crèche, whose parents or guardians receive funding towards the education of these children regularly. None of the children are involved in the production of the range.
How does the community benefit from the Shwe Shwe Poppis Project?
In addition to creating employment for 15 people/crafters , a Trust has been set up to administer and distribute profits from the sales of Shwe Shwe Poppis™ for the education of the children involved and the ACFS
What is the production capacity of the Project?
Although our products are 100% hand-made, the team is capable of handling large orders, given a reasonable lead time. A small stock of a selection of products is available for quick turn-around orders

Are the Poppis child-safe?
Our Poppis have been certified by the South African Bureau of Standards as safe for children over the age of 3 years.
